We have also stuck into our roots of liberty of choice. We are proud of how you don't need to specialise in RuneScape, and we never aim to make a class system that locks out gameplay dependent on the decisions you made when you created your account. I can not say too much just yet, but we're making a bunch of really cool adjustments to ensure that, however you develop your character, you will get an array of viable combat possibilities available to you. Stay tuned for much more information in a near future Og Blog!
Simplify balancing and code. The RuneScape code base has more than a decade of development layered on it, and may be a tricky spot for developers to do the job. Starting fresh with a centralised system means we can spend time sifting through our code heritage and more time creating awesome content that you enjoy. It is also the ideal time to rebalance many of the items that are poorly represented in the current game (like adding more benefit to 2h equipment during melee and ranged, and restructuring'weakening' spells), and reconsider those things we believe to be too powerful. It follows that every single piece of equipment will have strategic options associated with it, via its stats, related NPC weaknesses, and skills available whilst using it. As I've mentioned previously, the relationship between DPS and healing right now makes adding higher levelled gear very tough, so we're rebalancing all of that too, giving gamers the ability to have tons more life points by wearing more armour. This, then, provides us the freedom to release larger and better equipment later on that is for much more suited to our elite players (those with one or more combat-related levels at 90+).
What's going to happen to the price my things? As with many things in existence, the impact of change is frequently unpredictable. Therefore it's a dangerous time to be trading or speculating on how things might fall or rise in value. We are extremely likely to be modifying effects, stats, unique abilities etc during the beta, so the cost of items at the live match will most likely vary greatly and erratically.
